RMI Newborn Screening Program

Newborn Screening (NBS) is a process where every baby is tested for a group of conditions within 48 hours of birth. NBS can detect certain health problems not noticeable at birth and allows doctors to diagnose babies quickly and start treatment as soon as possible!

Funding provided by the US Health and Human Services under a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Cooperative Newborn Screening System Priorities Program (Co-Propel) grant.

It's hard to tell if newborns have certain serious health conditions just by looking at them. Many babies with these conditions have no family history or symptoms at birth and appear healthy in the hospital.

Newborn screening is often the only way to detect these conditions early.

Early diagnosis leads to timely care, treatment, and intervention. Babies identified and treated early can grow up healthy and develop normally.
